I knew of him and but not much about him. Now I do. Nice sketch of this writer-publisher-advocate

Great summary Dave. We need a new “Call.”

Thanks for this trip down memory lane, Dave! My Dad talked with Shep often during his 37 years as a wildlife biologist with the DNR. Shep pronounced him to be one of the last of the great “field bosses” in a department that was becoming steadily more political.

My six years in DNR and 34 years at the helm of the Little Traverse Conservancy overlapped with my Dad for about nine years, during which time we’d both get calls with the gruff voice on the other end saying, “it’s Glenn Sheppard. What’s going on?” After Dad retired Shep always had something nice to say about him before asking me what was happening on the conservation scene.

You sketched him beautifully in your profile, Dave! He was one of a kind.

Whence will they come? I recommend looking in the waiting area of the school principal’s office. You’re totally right: we need more people like Shep and so many young people need a cause worthy of their future.

Glen Shepard's newsletter was must reading at the DNR. What he thought mattered a lot.

There are a gazillion stories about Shep for sure. He was gruff, he could be crude and sexist, but he also put the state's wonderful resources first, and was willing to change his opinion about people when he saw what they were doing. Thanks Dave!
